Mario Kart 7 Released, Public Terrified of Blue Shells - This week saw the release of Mario Kart 7 for the 3DS. If you've played Mario Kart DS or Mario Kart Wii; this will be a familiar territory for you. While the basic rules of the game will be familiar to many, paragliding and submarine sections switch things up. In the same way as Mario Kart DS and Mario Kart Wii, 16 original courses are offset by remixed versions of older tracks, including Koopa Beach from Mario Kart 64, and Waluigi Pinball from Mario Kart DS - personal favourites. If you want to show off your driving prowess, you can take things online, and prove to the world you know how to handle your shells and bananas.
Obsidian's New RPG is in South Park... Wait, What? - While South Park video games have been around since the Nintendo 64, having it be published by the team behind Fallout: New Vegas and Dungeon Siege III is an unusual turn. True to their game design sensibilities, South Park: The Game is going to be an RPG, where the player can create their own character - learning to adapt to a new home. Knowing winks to gaming abstractions are promised, along with similiaries to Paper Mario and .'Final Fantasy VII.
Publishers THQ say that South Park: The Game will release in the "second half of 2012" for Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC.
Games Companies Raise $130,000 for Charity As you may have noticed from the larger-than-usual number of moustachioed students on campus last month, November was Movember, wherein men grow out their moustaches for charity, raising money to help the fight against prostate cancer. In America, several games companies had a competition to raise the most money for this worthy cause, so whoever won, charity was guaranteed a win! The total raised by the 42 participating teams was around $132,000. Team EA were the "victorious" ones, raising $18,000 just by themselves, which is impressive on its own. They were followed in the top three by Ubisoft Montreal on $17k and Nintendo of America on $10.5k. It's nice to see the normally competetive corporations coming together for a good cause!
Minecraft Gets New Lead Developer It was released two weeks ago, but that doesn't mean the game has ceased development, Minecraft is already gearing up for its next release. No-one knows when this will happen, but we do now know that the lead developer isn't going to be Notch - he's handed over control of the game to his partner Jens "Jeb" Bergensten. This has been welcomed by many in the community - Jens is widely seen as being the developer of more interesting portions in the game, whereas Notch vetoes ideas he doesn't like. Furthermore, we can hope that this could mean more frequent updates - 2011 having seen less than ten major updates. While Notch will still be developing, he will now be spending his time on other projects, such as Mojang's upcoming title Scrolls, as well as anything else he chooses to make. Hopefully they turn out to be as successful as Minecraft
