Week in Games - December 11th

Animal Crossing 3DS
Source: Nintendo Press Pack
Sunday, 11th December 2011
This week we learn that the rumourmill can be dangerous for Nintendo's stocks, anthropomorphic animals won't judge you for your aesthetic tastes, and billiards is way more fun when you can cheat.

Android Market Going Deal Crazy - We're not particularly huge fans of mobile gaming here at The Yorker, but that doesn't mean we don't know deals when we see them. Right now, to celebrate 10 billion app downloads, Google is putting up ten apps for ten pence every day!

Needless to say, there have been some fantastic offers on some of the games in the store - Minecraft Portable Edition was one of the initial titles, and as I write this the games on offer include The Sims 3, Age of Zombies, Aparatus and Asphalt 6: Adrenaline HD. Needless to say, mobile games have advanced ridiculously in the last five years, and these are no sprite-based time-limited padding games - they're full-featured titles. To purchase them you'll need an Android device (phone or tablet), and to either go to the Market app or visit http://market.android.com and log in with the Google account your device is linked to.

More Details on Animal Crossing 3DS, Dudes Wearing Skirts - While announced quite a while ago, information about the latest Animal Crossing title has been thin of the ground. However this week, Nintendo has put out a Developer Diary video that sahows us new footage, and gives us info on some new changes.

Covered in the video below, are how the town you live in has become much larger, that the player character is hired as the mayor of the town (for better or for worse), and how the character design has changed up from previous games, so players have more clothing options - and no restrictions. It's all wrapped up with a guitar rendition of the game's composer. It's all very sweet.

Miyamoto Quits, Doesn't Quit, Maybe Quitting Nintendo - The gaming press earlier this week was abuzz with rumours that Nintendo's principle developer Shigeru Miyamoto, the visionary behind the Mario and Zelda series, was resigning from the company. In a statement he claimed he was stepping down to focus on creating smaller titles for the company. Then the company got wind of this and promptly denied all allegations. Following a less-than-stellar year for the company, it left many in the games industry fearful for the future of Nintendo. The thing that many realised though, is that this is a day which, eventually, the company will have to confront. Like Steve Jobs for Apple and Bil Gates for Microsoft, the leaders of companies (though Miyamoto isn't technically CEO - that position is held by Satoru Iwata) often do resign, and this usually hurts stock price - Nintendo's fell 2% on the news. Regardless, we can hope that with his not retiring, he'll remain at the company for several more productive years!

Not even Pool Sharks are Safe From Katamari -

The trailer largely speaks for itself (...I think...), but one of the launch titles for the Playstation Vita in February will be Touch My Katamari (no laughing, please), the newest sequel in the Katamari Damacy series. Previous games have been filled with the quirkiest aesthetics and the catchiest music, but they all play extremely similarly. The new stretch/squash mechanic introduced here has the potential to throw some well needed spice into the mix.
