We were seated near the door, which caused a draught whenever somebody came in, but it was quite empty for a Saturday so this didn’t cause too much of a problem. (I was actually surprised by how empty it was: I suppose the location, on a street full of other restaurant competition, makes it hard to draw in customers). We ordered a bottle of the house white, a Trebbiano, to share over the meal, which was fairly typical for a house wine, but satisfactory nonetheless. Service throughout the meal was prompt and friendly, but not overbearing, and even when we were the last ones left in the restaurant, the staff did not try to kick us out and let us take our time.
I started with the avocado and Brie cheesecake, which was delicious – an excellent blend of flavours that complemented each other perfectly. It did have the consistency of cheesecake, though, where I was expecting a bit more bite. As a paté, essentially, it ought to have been served with bread or melba toast, and in the end I had to ask for something to spread it on, as it was so creamy. But this is a small quibble to make for such a tasty starter.
For main, I had the ‘poached fillet of smoked haddock resting on cheesy mash with a leek and grain mustard sauce’. In a word: delicious. Simplistic but warming; good homemade fare. The portions could have been bigger, but I think that was more due to my sporting a hangover and thus a cavernous appetite than to an oversight on their part. And lastly, to finish I had the sticky toffee pudding, a perennial favourite. It was a little too curranty for my personal preferences, but if all you are looking for is something small and sweet after your meal, then it did the trick.
I’m surprised that I haven’t heard of this restaurant before – it had a lovely varied menu, with good provision for both vegetarians/pescatarians and meat-eaters (I am the former, and my mother the latter). It was reasonably priced, and each course was individually satisfying. I would definitely recommend it, and not just if parents are up – it would be a lovely place to go with friends after a morning’s shopping in town. Although, it’s always nicer to have meals bought for you… I plan to go there again, perhaps with the father next time!
