James Arden checks out the garage rockers latest album.
The Christian rock band from Brighton bring religion to the masses.
Recipe for modern R'n'B album: liberal helpings of guest rappers and an overdose of sexual euphemisms.
After a good first album it seemed that the acoustic guitar toting pair had run out of ideas. For their latest efforts, then, they've got their touring band into the studio to liven things up a bit. Unfortunately the only effect has been to make them sound like a full band that has run out of ideas. Something In My Eye causes you to wait far to long for a chorus that, when it does come, only leaves you wishing it had the saccharine bombast of Take That's Patience. Rather that than this banal plodder.

You know that song you don't want to admit that you really like - the type of song that's acceptable to say is good, but you wouldn't normally listen to it. Alpha Beat's new single is that ten fold. Start to finish this catchy little retro-pop number combines eighties new wave with clap choruses reminiscing on something from the musical Grease. The only problem with this track is getting people to admit how good it really is.

"They've gone folk!" scream the pop music commentators! And yes, the latest from the ever intriguing pair is driven by a folk melody and floaty atmospherics. However, the backing track takes its lead from Sigur Ros but ties itself tightly to a pop sensibility. Does this represent a striving for longevity over the disposable nature of the 'Frapp's previous electro-pop outings? We'll see when the album, Seventh Tree, appears in February.
