Recipe for modern R'n'B album: liberal helpings of guest rappers and an overdose of sexual euphemisms.
J. Lo's going to get us kicked off this week with the video for 'Hold It Don't Drop It', and it's clear that she is definitely not 'Jenny from the block' anymore. Our Jen's grown up, but she's still as fabulous as ever. She's traded her hoop earrings and tracksuits for a grown-up new look, but without compromising her tunes, which are still as fun and boogy-inspiring as ever. This video has disco-diva written all over it, from the big hair and big band, to the great big disco ball (and not forgetting Jennifer’s trademark big booty). Miss Lopez has even bought into the 'big-eye' fashion, pioneered by Girls Aloud and copied more recently by fellow British girl band, the Sugarbabes. Yet, still, the video is in no way trashy (apart from the silver lippy... whoops!); based around a monochrome colour scheme, J. Lo still has all the attitude without the aaaaarghhhhhh.
Speaking of attitude, Robyn is back with her single 'Be Mine'. The New Year seems to have mellowed her too, however, and this video goes to prove it. It seems alot more adult than the videos for 'Every Heartbeat' and 'Handle Me', portraying an obsession with appearance really well... all the way to Robyn 'doing a Britney' (watch the video... you'll see what I mean). However, Robyn's fun personality still shines through. She plays with different looks using a variety of wigs, and some pretty freaky contact lenses. Plus the parts of the video which flash between different images of her are just very cool.
Liverpool based band The Wombats up the cool stakes with their new song 'Moving to New York'. It's very funny, made all the more humorous, in my opinion, because the lead singer Matthew Murphy actually does bear a striking resemblance to a wombat. There are some pretty weird moments, probably to be expected from a video about insomnia, including a Jack Sparrow-esque moment when eyes are painted on Murphy's eyelids. My favourite part of the whole thing is when Steven, the talking hamster, suddenly grows and runs through a train tunnel. It's brief, but genius. But the best thing about this video is that it's supported by a rocking song. Well done to you Wombats!
Our final pick of this week, then, is 'Lights Go Out' by Client, and I think I've saved the best till last. Client are a three piece British synth-pop girl band, and have really done will with this song and video. In the past they have worked with Carl Barât and Pete Doherty (both from The Libertines) as well as other high profile artists. A past video for the song 'Pornography' was directed by French director Jamie Deliessche from video production company Schmooze, so this single came attached with high expectations. However, no problem there, the song, and especially the video, are both awesome. It's a bit rave, a bit trippy and very very cool.
