James Arden checks out the garage rockers latest album.
The Christian rock band from Brighton bring religion to the masses.
Recipe for modern R'n'B album: liberal helpings of guest rappers and an overdose of sexual euphemisms.
Now, there was a tendency for the bands to mumble their names so I'm not precisely sure who was who, but I do know that the first band - later confirmed as Kayak Attack- were quality. A techno/drum and bass/ funk/ soul hybrid with a scientist on keys (complete with lab coat and goggles), they were truly original. Their drummer and bass player were so tight and funky I just wanted to steal them and use them for my own personal disco. Combined with a nerdy but quirky Kraftwerkesque stage presence, I wanted them to win. They didn't, but the band who did weren't too bad either.
Second up and eventual winners Kid Gloves were an excellent outfit with meaty hooks and well chosen set which showcased all the different aspects of the band's sound. The second tune, a slower number with a lazy, Chicago blues feel was particularly good if lacking the sort of blazing originality which made the the Kayak boys so good. Credit must go however to their frontman, Ollie Regan, a man with real star quality. As well as possessing a mean set of vocal chords, he had the kind of magnetism which no other frontman could match on the night . His presence pushed this rocking if slightly unoriginal group onto a higher plain altogether and gives them a real chance in the next stage of the competition.
On a night of high standards across the board, Jab Jab came across particularly well too. They were a tight, energetic rock trio with a bluesy, garage band sound. Unusually, they didn't have a bassist, although you never would have guessed such was the richness of their racket. Their final number which sounded like it was called Railway Blues was a great tune with a crunchy riff and a plethora of rhythm and tempo changes to keep the punters interested. It was just a shame that their other songs didn't deviate more from the usual forumla.
Apologies to those of you who didn't get a mention. It's 12.30 and I have a French commentary due for 10.15 tomorrow!
