James Arden checks out the garage rockers latest album.
The Christian rock band from Brighton bring religion to the masses.
Recipe for modern R'n'B album: liberal helpings of guest rappers and an overdose of sexual euphemisms.
What I wasn’t to expect however was the questioning of my sanity that occurred mid-set. Was the crowd insane and I normal or was the inverse in fact true? This band seem to attract an odd bunch from pre-pubescent yobs to couples who seem to think they’ve just stepped out of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and all the subtle shades of peculiarity that encompass the in-between.
The one-and-only support band to this set was Lecorum: a four-piece male ensemble from Hull. Supporting the fabulous Sugars, I expected this band to be jam-packed with originality. The only thing that this band bursted-at-the-seams with was a dullness that caused me to wish them off-stage after every song. This band was so boring in fact that they had to encourage an unwilling crowd to take a step further toward them. Stepping forward however meant endorsing this dull-as-dishwater sound hence the general reluctance exuding from the Fibbers crowd.
After such an all-encompassing negativism, I will go on to describe the truly fantastic threesome that headlined the evening. Whacking out ‘bluesy duets of heartache and jealousy’, The Sugars take you back to an era that set a precedent in the glamour stakes. Think full skirts, cinched waists and sleek blonde-bombshell style hairdos. Think Elvis-style crooning, bluesy-turned-indie beats and songs that make a ‘Way To My Heart’ (their no.9 in the indie-charts hit) with emotive lyrics and saccharine sweet sounds.
After losing their sexy brunette drummer, this band had a new odd-little-guy to replace her. The substitution clearly worked. The band were on top form at this Fibbers gig, causing this reviewer to surmise that this is the best live band she’s seen for blummin’ ages. Debating whether to watch the crowd or the band became a constant internal battle however. Luckily, The Sugars pulled out all-the-stops and came out as sure-fire winners. Check out their MySpace page for details of where to catch these Rock ‘n’ Roll hootenannies in action.
