Tegan And Sara, Leeds Metropolitan Union (23rd Feb)

Tuesday, 26th February 2008
Review by Matt Henderson and Hugh Gilroy

The night started with support act Northern State, consisting of three female rappers, who managed to revive all that was terrible about 90s pop-rap in a single 30 minute slot. This laughable attempt at music even made us thankful that B*Witched were booked for our Freshers’ Ball. Despite this never-ending set, the crowd were still buzzing with anticipation for the headliners.

In this fairly intimate venue, the influence of the band was really visible, with many girls sporting the same haircuts and dress sense. Gig etiquette flyers were posted around, instructing no bra throwing or indecent comments and implored due applause of the bands. Yet, a group of die-hard fans ignored all of this and created some comical banter with Tegan and Sara, calling out "you’re fit" and "get your rat out", sparking an anecdote about the Canadian meaning of ‘fit’.

Playing both classic hits like Walking With a Ghost (which was famously covered by The White Stripes) and material like Back In Your Head from newly released album The Con, the girls delivered a enthralling two hour set. The breaks between songs were filled with stories and jokes with the crowd - according to Sara, people in Leeds dress so smartly around town they look like they’re off to proms. Even the tradition of the encore didn’t escape mockery and was made into a humorous farce. The crowd were very much in the spirit of the night and chanted "TEGAN… SARA…" whilst waiting for the band to re-emerge during the encore.

Both girls took turns on the keyboard, guitar and vocals, combining excellently to give a harmonious and varied sound. Euphonic and punchy, the catchy indie pop songs had the crowd bopping and singing along. The audience of Leeds Met Student Union were very appreciative and clearly enjoyed the performance, as Tegan and Sara left the stage to rapturous applause and cheers. We highly recommend checking the band out, and catching them on tour.
