Tuesday’s ensemble consisted of David Bradley Williams on clarinet, brilliantly supported by Chloe Weiss and Peter Rocker on piano. Not at the same time of course, they took it in turns.
The first piece they played was Aaron Copland’s Excerpts from Sonata for Clarinet and Piano, a frenetic, dissonant piece which was not to my taste. However, there is no doubt that it was played with great skill, Bradley-Williams, negotiating the rhythmic and tempo changes with panache.
The next piece, Gerald Finzi’s Five Bagatelle’s for Clarinet and Piano was a delight, particularly the andante sections. A light and varied collection, it was the ideal matinee piece, the musical manifestation of pimms and lemonade on the lawn.
Between now and the end of term, all kinds of acts will be showcasing their talents including a hairy arsed jazz/funk band and a barbershop quartet. The concerts are held every Tuesday and Friday, 1pm, Jack Lyons Concert Hall.
