Live Music In York

gigguide
Pictured: Towers of London
Thursday, 16th October 2008
In the likely event that York's nightclubs have failed to satisfy your musical palette with ritual playings of the Baywatch theme tune and Summer of '69 by the end of freshers week then it might be time to check-out our fair city's live music scene.

There's plently on offer at a number of small venues including Fibbers, CityScreen Basement Bar and The Junction amongst others. Here's a handpicked selection of gigs worth checking out over the next couple of weeks...

Indie/ Pop/ Alternative:

Helene @ Basement Bar; Fri 17th (£5 /£4 w/ flyer/ NUS) Expect saccharine sweet poppy ballads delivered with a touch of class from talented Londoner Helene, who cites among others Belle and Sebastian, F. Scott-Fitzgerald, Nancy Sinatra and Franz Kafka as influences. Support acts Mossyrock + The Sorry kisses (fans of The Cardigans will like these guys).

Bromheads Jackets @ Fibbers; Sat 18th (£8 adv/ £10 door)

Three very English lads weave a tail of everyday life, highs and lows, girlfriends mobile phones and car washes. “With glasses bigger than her face she’s off to get her whatsit waxed” - great opening line or what? Stylistically calling upon influences from The Jam to fellow Sheffielders Arctic Monkeys and Little Man Tate, this is another Steel City Gang going supernova! (Support from Lets wrestle + Hungry Ghosts).

Team Waterpolo @ Fibbers; Sun 19th (£6 adv/ 7 door)

Team Waterpolo are my personal pick if you’re looking something a bit more interesting (and better) than normal indie fare. The alternative group are inventive and original in their jangly upbeat songwriting also utilising a number of samples in certain songs. Expect poppy, happy tunes done incredibly well.

Rock/ Punk:

Towers of London @ Fibbers; Mon 20th (£9 adv/ £11 door)

Fronted by loudmouthed lovable twathead Donny Tourette are seventies glam punk throwback Towers of London. Expect a hugely entertaining set with oodles of attitude, regardless of the obvious heavy inspiration from the likes of the Sex Pistols and Motley Crue. Support from Koopa plus Breakout degree.

The Sneakypeeks @ Fibbers, Fri 24th (£4 adv/ £5 door)

Storming back with a brand a new single and coming on like The Coral jamming with The Who, Sneakypeek's terrace chant hearts-of-gold choruses are to die for. Part Oasis babysitting The Arctic Monkeys and part punk-funk disco floor-fillers erupting like Franz Ferdinand on speed and vodka. The very best of York. Supports include Sandhill.

Hip-Hop/ Grime:

Roll Deep @ Fibbers; Wed 15th (£10 adv)

Its not that often that we get hip-hop up here in York, so if you’re into grime be sure to check out Roll Deep at Fibbers on Wednesday, touring to promote their new album '‘Return Of The Big Money Sound’'. Expect thumping bass and dirty beats.

Club Nights: Indie

Every Friday is Fibbers ‘YoYo’ Club Night, this week is the ‘Gonzo Aftershow party – YoYo vs Zane Lowe’ featuring in addition to resident YoYo DJ’s, a guest DJ set form Zane Lowe. Regular music is primarily indie; expect the likes of Vampire Weekend, Arctic Monkeys, Cribs, Libertines, Arcade Fire, Hot Chip, Strokes, Killers, Smiths, Noah and the Whale, Foals, Interpol etc etc etc
