James Arden checks out the garage rockers latest album.
The Christian rock band from Brighton bring religion to the masses.
Recipe for modern R'n'B album: liberal helpings of guest rappers and an overdose of sexual euphemisms.
Highlights include Thomas Truax [March 30], following up November’s brilliantly odd York debut with a return to the City Screen Basement, indie with electronics from the likes of Casiotone for the Painfully Alone [Fibbers, April 24] and Esser [Duchess, April 19], and guitars from Brakes [Duchess, April 17]. The Duchess also welcomes Energetic wonky-popster VV Brown (touring with the frankly awful Gary Go) [March 28], York’s own Hijak Oscar [April 3] and twice Mercury-nominated Eliza Carthy [April 21].
For those of you who love tribute acts (I assume you’re out there somewhere, we get so many), premier Beatles fakers Sgt. Pepper’s Only Dart Board Band [Duchess, April 11], The Smiths Indeed [Fibbers, March 27] and Whole Lotta Led [Duchess, April 18] will be a mouth-watering prospect, the latter performing Led Zeppelin 1 in its entirety. For something heavier, Fibber’s has Poison The Well [April 11] and And So I Watch You From Afar [April 16].
If you feel the need to escape York, hopping over to Leeds provides all manner of opportunities. Rising indie venue the Brudenell Social Club plays host to the much hyped Scottish collective Broken Records [April 2] and Loney, Dear [April 17], a Swedish singer-songwriter whose latest ‘folktronica’ album, Dear John, got positive reviews a-plenty. Johannesburg art-rockers Blk Jks [April 20] are unmissable too, if you’re able to make it.
Elsewhere, Gomez [O2 Academy, April 17] tour their latest album, soon-to-be-big The Big Pink [April 20] play the Cockpit and Bat For Lashes [April 11] brings her captivating show to the Metropolitan Uni. If you fancy something different, Opera North’s Howard Assembly Room presents the UK premiere of Being Dufay, [April 2] Ambrose Field’s modern reworking of the music of Renaissance composer Guillaume Dufay, with video provided by Mick Lynch.
