The Christian rock band from Brighton bring religion to the masses.
Recipe for modern R'n'B album: liberal helpings of guest rappers and an overdose of sexual euphemisms.
21st Century Breakdown marks the first new material from Green Day in five years, since American Idiot. While these punk rockers may be nearing 40 they show no sign of slowing down, with their social rebellion still in full swing. As Billy Joe puts it, 21st Century Breakdown is a challenge to “frankly any form of authority”.
They haven’t lost their fondness for 2-part songs or suggestive song titles, with tracks such as ‘Christian’s Inferno’, ‘American Eulogy: Mass Hysteria/Modern World’ and the bonus track ‘A Quick One While He’s Away’. This three act album is in the same stylistic vein, musically and visually, as American Idiot – angry songs with an underlying message about modern society. Clearly America still hasn’t taken notice of their crusade, with lyrics such as “I don’t give a shit/About the modern world.”
Enjoyable melodies manage to filter through the rage, with 'Peacemaker' being a jaunty number with a slightly Eastern-European feel. Most of the songs join together quite well so the whole thing feels like a complete package. And you get your money’s worth – 20 songs as a journey through Green Day’s socially-conscious minds. Bless them, they’re still rebellious adolescents at heart.
