The Singles Club gets some sun

Sunburn
"I have skin cancer now. Take heed."
Monday, 1st June 2009
We're welcoming June with the most beautiful weather of the year so far, and the sunshine has burnt its way into this week's singles reviews...

Dizzee Rascal: Bonkers

I’m feeling a little hot under the collar, and it’s not down to the weather; see, the thing is, as a general rule, I hate rap. So imagine my surprise and emotional confusion when I listened to this new offering from Dizzee Rascal and found that I actually quite liked it! ‘Bonkers’ winds its way through different genre influences atop an addictive bass-line and while Mr. Rascal may repeat his lyrics ad nauseam, they’re not half bad! Consider my mind opened. Innit?

Kasabian: Fire

An unexpected turn of events, this. The acoustic, swung opening of their latest single has Kasabian sounding like they’ve unplugged their guitars and taken them outside on a lazy summer’s afternoon. It’s a far cry from their early electric assaults, but ‘Fire’ isn’t a sunny song; even with the time-change and almost-catchy hook of the chorus, it’s a tad dreary. Apparently searching for a new path in the desert, Kasabian sound like they’ve lost their way. Not so hot.

Passion Pit: The Reeling

Riding the crest of the electro-pop tsunami flooding our discotheques and dousing our barbeques, hotly tipped Passion Pit’s colourful single may give them the edge. Enriching the ubiquitous synth is an unashamedly 80s sound and, if you care to listen, (relatively) meaningful lyrics backed by a heart-gladdening children’s choir. ‘The Reeling’ causes the kind of mad, spasmodic dancing that, in the current climate, will result in a lot of re-enactments of the final minutes of the Snowman (sorry to those who haven’t seen it – he melts).

Pet Shop Boys: Did You See Me Coming?

For those who usually enjoy the Pet Shop Boys' music, this single follows the usual formula and is likely to please. Sadly, I do not belong to this group. Whilst it is a bright, chirpy love song, its sunny nature is of the kind which wakes you up too early after a heavy night and makes you squint. The grating vocals may make you feel hot but only in the sense of burning anger.

In all seriousness, how on earth could someone ever get this kind of sunburn in the UK? Alright sure it was nice and sunny over the last few days, but it was like 25 degrees.

This person has clearly been struck by a spot of heat dizziness and fallen backwards onto the barbeque.

You don't get sunburn from the heat - from the strength of the sun! Temperature doesn't have anything to do with it.

#3 I would imagine that there is some sort of correlation between the strength of the sun and the temperature? Then again I could be wrong.
