Review: To My Boy

To My Boy
The "To My Boy" Boys
Sunday, 10th June 2007
"Saying "that's so new rave" is so new rave". Ah, what a little pearl of wisdom from To My Boy's Sam White. So, to be both new rave, and to nicely compartmentalise this up and coming duo, I'm going to say that To My Boy's electro dancey indie pop tunes are so new rave. And it's only a good thing.

We found Sam White and Jack Snape in Fibbers on Tuesday, supporting the lovely Kate Nash. A daunting task? Not at all. Steve Lamacq is a big To My Boy fan, and I’m starting to learn that he has rather good taste in music. There was a bit of a false start to the set when the boy's trusty computer let them down, but as soon as To My Boy were off, the audience was hit with their beautifully original brand of happy, catchy, electro tunes. They’re perfect for a bit of the old shape throwing, and definitely for singing along to, everything I wanted from a night in Fibbers.

If you have the chance, try to get hold of To My Boy for a quick chat, the one we had was AMAZING. Here are some facts you might enjoy, I hope they weren’t lying to us:

  1. To My Boy’s ideal home would be a submarine, like Thunderbird 4.
  2. Sam’s favourite artist is Max Ernst, Jack’s is Tony Hart.
  3. Jack has great respect for Ultimate Frisbee; he thinks that it’s truly a modern sport.
  4. Sam and Jack find Celine Dion and Meatloaf very easy to muddle up.
  5. To film their video for the Grid, To My Boy actually went to space.
  6. Sam’s aim with his look is to get on the back page of NME for looking like Brandon Flowers of The Killers.
  7. Sam is the Yin to Jack’s Yang.
  8. During an interview for MTV, Sam and Jack had a dance off which was both “horrible” and “embarrassing”.

In my personal favourite tune, the Grid, Jack declares that, “my dear our paths are bound to cross”. I hope that the To My Boy are soon all over your radio and music channels, but if not, I’d recommend a little path crossing at Fibbers on the 14th June (Thursday of week 8) when To My Boy will be returning with Pull Tiger Tail to fill us all with more joyous new rave tunes.
