James Arden checks out the garage rockers latest album.
The Christian rock band from Brighton bring religion to the masses.
Recipe for modern R'n'B album: liberal helpings of guest rappers and an overdose of sexual euphemisms.
Falling bombs may be a far cry from raindrops, but judging by the lyrics in this single, UK house duo Basement Jaxx may have been hit by one (in the romantic sense, that is). Nevertheless, it doesn’t appear to have affected their ability to carry off a catchy number; ‘Raindrops’ is a glorious four minutes of electro-romanticism. As a saying about love and war goes: Easy to start, difficult to end, impossible to forget.

Making waves across the Atlantic, their latest single sees our intrepid Bible-bashers threatening more than ever to conquer the consciousness of teenage girls everywhere. Like the fallout of an oddly saccharine WMD, the over-polished jangly guitars and oh-so-clichéd lyrics make ‘Paranoid’ the sort of thing you wouldn’t wish on anyone, least of all innocent civilians. If North Korea’s threats turn to action, the more vengeful amongst us will hope for something more consequential to hurl back at them.

With a look that’ll melt your eyeballs and a 10 megaton voice to match, singer-songwriter VV Brown is one to watch (or not, if you want to keep your skin). 'Since We've Been Wrong' has the same sense of distant, terrifying beauty of a mushroom cloud. It successfully undermines so many lyrical clichés and radiates an ironic coolness through their combination with an innovative lyrical style and the relentless solemnity of the guitar work. From the first disconcertingly hollow twang from his Gibson, Rodriguez Lopez sets off a chain-reaction leading to the inevitable drum-crashing 20 megaton blast of the song’s crescendo. Interesting, thoughtful, this band is sure to have a long half-life.
