James Arden checks out the garage rockers latest album.
The Christian rock band from Brighton bring religion to the masses.
Recipe for modern R'n'B album: liberal helpings of guest rappers and an overdose of sexual euphemisms.
With the summer festival season already upon us, Kings of Leon have stepped in just in time with their new single ‘Notion’ from their staggeringly successful album Only By The Night. Contrasting with their most recent releases, this offering from the Followill brothers is a slow-burning, heavy-rock affair, guitar and bass lines pining away beneath Caleb’s thirsty vocals. The slower tempo should prove to be perfect for those less clearheaded revellers to dance to at the band’s forthcoming slots at Reading and Leeds.

If, like me, you’re already mourning Glastonbury or fruitlessly lusting after one of its upcoming cousins, don’t overdose just yet. Fling open your window, close your eyes and let Animal Collective’s latest single, ‘Summertime Clothes’, bring the festival to you (minus the faeces). With the layered vocals, various electronic beeps and beats it’s an eclectic and crowded song but entirely coherent. Each individual sound builds up to create a focused point of warm and happy energy (a sort of musical pyramid). A safe alternative to drugs.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ electro reinvention flourishes like Glastonbury in the sun, as Karen O’s yelps of “off with your head / dance ‘til you’re dead” taking centre stage against a backdrop of synth keyboards and drums. ‘Heads Will Roll’ is as spirited and exciting as any other YYYs single, guaranteed to get you dancing rhythmically if you’re completely sober or like a maniac (with beer throwing potential) if you’re, well, off your head. It’s a treat.
