Gig guide: Weeks 5 & 6

Mic
Saturday, 7th November 2009
As we reach Week 5 of term, here are just a few local gigs to take away the mid-term blues.

In York:

Magnapow! [Fibbers – 08/11 - £4otd]
The university’s most recent Battle of the Bands winners are back in town tomorrow, to power their way through another musically literate but fun-loving set, coming across as Basement Jaxx meets The Go! Team. Support includes other BOB contenders Ah Good the Sea and Johnny P and the Howlie T Experience, so why not go along and check out some of the finest of our student bands?

Dinosaur Pile-Up [City Screen Basement – 12/11 – £6.50/£7.50otd]
Matt Bigland's alternative rock trio comes to York with an understandable tour in support of Pixies behind them. Their latest release was crowned Single of the Week by Zane Lowe and they seem to have the energy to go the distance. If you've got time for Pixies, Nirvana and Foo Fighters, Dinosaur Pile-Up come strongly recommended.

Southside Johnny & the Ashbury Dukes [Grand Opera House – 14/11 - £22.50]
The grandfather of the New Jersey sound, Southside Johnny broke through around the same time as Springsteen, and played a huge part in influencing Jon Bon Jovi. Over 35 years, Southside’s career has taken him all over the world, impressing fans from New Jersey to Newcastle. His ever-present band the Ashbury Dukes back him in York on the latest leg of their European tour.

Magic P [Melbourne – 21/11 – free]
The previous year's BOB winners, Magic P and the Innuendos' dance-folk fusions continue to wow the local crowds. Their set at last term's Woodstock was an undoubted highlight, so their free show at the Melbourne pub is surely worth a look.

Around York:

This week in Leeds, York’s own The Federals support Brakes [The Well, 12/11, £6] the same night as Mr Scruff comes to Leeds University [12/11, £10]. The following week, The Antlers play Room 3 at the Cockpit, in support of their heartbreaking album Hospice [19/11, £6] and Alabama 3 bring their unique sound to the O2 Academy [19/11, £15]. Motörhead are due to rock the Academy as well [20/11, £25], whilst Bonobo headlines an evening of DJs at the Faversham [20/11, £6]

A whole bunch of big tours are about to drop by Manchester, with both Arctic Monkeys [21/11, £29.50] and Kasabian [20/11, £25] touring their latest albums at the MEN Arena. Away from the guitar bands, Will Young plays the Apollo [15/11, £35] and Chemical Brothers headline the Bugged Out 15th Anniversary Party [Sankey’s Soap, 20/11, £25]. If you happen not to have a huge wad of cash free for a night out, Jay Reatard plays his high-octane garage rock at the Roadhouse [12/11, £8].
