Recipe for modern R'n'B album: liberal helpings of guest rappers and an overdose of sexual euphemisms.
One year after making her way onto the music scene, and becoming a favourite of bloggers such as Popjustice and Kanye West, Marina Diamandis finally releases her major single release in the form of ‘Mowgli’s Road’. Judging from both this song and the crazy video where she is endowed with paper limbs, she is already amassing quite an impressive back catalogue. Look no further for the Sound of 2010 for it appears it has arrived.

More mellow than some of his previous singles – but still catchy and upbeat – ‘Rain’ sees a matured Mika nailing his trademark falsetto pop sound. Building through a wistful verse, reflecting the break-up letter lyrics, the song’s real strength is the contrast between this and the explosively buoyant chorus. Well-sung, well-arranged and well-structured, this is the first single from Mika’s new album, The Boy Who Knew Too Much, that really extends his reputation.

Synth pop can sound either really fresh or really dated. On 11th Dimension it's fresher than Wimbledon's famous strawberries. And, alongside what may be Julian Casablancas' finest lyrical work, his famous vocals are put to their best use. Crucially though, it moves away from NME Award-winning guitar music and looks to 2010 for musical inspiration. Reminiscent of a cheerful Thom Yorke or a non-profit Pharrell, 11th Dimension is commercial music at its highest peak.

Nice voice, shame about the song. It’s vapid, tweenagery pop. Sounds pretty much the same as “In for the Kill”. Could be a case of you like that, you’ll like this, but sounds to me like she’ll run out of ideas pretty soon. Nevertheless, La Roux has a different sound to most of the other pop tunes around at the moment, atleast that can be said in her favour.
