The Christian rock band from Brighton bring religion to the masses.
Recipe for modern R'n'B album: liberal helpings of guest rappers and an overdose of sexual euphemisms.
This response wasn’t entirely unprovoked. Before there are any signs of Regina Spektor I have already managed to enrage three members of the, unfortunately seated, audience and solicited a personal thank you from the beautiful support act. Apparently at seated concerts Opera and Cinema rules apply and my commentary isn’t very much appreciated.
Having touted tickets outside we thought we had a good deal until we get a phone call and Aaron has secured a legendary £6 ticket, but naturally is a bit wary as to how the concert might turn out. Then Regina arrives and I’m speechless, I don’t say a word for the rest of the night which means I’m not bored. High praise for a Russian born, classically trained pianist with a pronounced New York accent.
First up is 'The Calculation' followed by some of the songs from her latest album Far and then she says, “I’m going to play one of my old songs, this one’s called 'Ode to Divorce'”. And this is when the show really gets going. Her vocals are stretched and strained in the way that only she can get away with and by the time she plays 'On the Radio' the audience really seem to be enjoying themselves.
At which point she moves to the keyboard before taking the mic for an acapella song about eye colours, which makes the audience laugh. A response which makes me cringe, but it was a good song and well sung nonetheless. Regina picks up her blue Epiphone and teases the audience before playing 'That Time' and driving the audience crazy. She reverts back to her piano and plays a few more new songs and then leaves, missing out most of her early hits.
Promptly she returns for the encore, which includes a light change, and old songs. The stage is kitted out for Christmas. Christmas shopping music, white lights on a blue background and silver orbs that rest like oversized baubles on stage will have that effect. Regina unfortunately did not play 'Summer in the City' or 'Consequence of Sounds'. She did however leave us with a heart-warming rendition of 'Hotel Song'. And it was very nice but I think I would rather see her at a festival.
i love regina spektor ! lucky you!
