The Minster was absolutely freezing, but this was soon forgotten as Seymour began conducting this well rehearsed, excellently staged performance. The architecture of the Minster seemed the perfect setting for the piece, fitting well with the beauty and emotion of Haydn’s oratorio bouncing of its Gothic walls.
Particular praise must be given to the three soloists – Mhairi Lawson (soprano), Adrian Thompson (tenor), and Matthew Brook (bass). All three sang with an incredible range of passion and energy, bringing the performance to life in the original German.
The University Choir and Nothern Sinfonia performed flawlessly and consistently, no small feat given the length of the performance (just over two and a half hours). Overall it was a powerful concert, conducted with vigour by Seymour, vibrantly sung and excellently played by all those involved - a fantastic evening.
