James Arden checks out the garage rockers latest album.
The Christian rock band from Brighton bring religion to the masses.
Recipe for modern R'n'B album: liberal helpings of guest rappers and an overdose of sexual euphemisms.
The best bit (apart from a spot of ceiling caressing) was when Ramirez not only hedged his bets on a crowd-surf, but went for the risky back-dive jump. Needless to say the startled crowd was having none of it, promptly dropping him.
Lead singer Yannis' vocals made sudden sense as they found a marching, desperate resolve in “Hummer”, causing the indie contingent to forgive their earlier trauma.
Fortunately Foals made up for their testing choice of accompaniment with an electric, pumping set. With crowd favorites “Calsius”, “Two Steps Twice” and “Big Big Love” the band made their way through a melodic and turbulent performance. Lead singer Yannis' vocals made sudden sense as they found a marching, desperate resolve in “Hummer”, causing the indie contingent to forgive their earlier trauma. Dazed in wonderment at their new 4ft 5inch Yannis-version of Jupiter, the tight-trousered masses raised their glow sticks slowly and waved simultaneously to pay their respects. By this stage the band were in a world of their own, with even the keyboard player writhing in pained shocks to the tightly knit guitar riffs.
Foals are a band that could be a mainstay of indie-dance-revival, following the guiding light of this year’s Mercury-winners. The occasional four-to-the-floor beat and pounding basslines push the sound firmly into frantic dancing territory, while the pained vocals and psychic interplay between the two guitarists keep things human and emotive. With the closing of “Hummer” guitarist Jimmy Smith simply dropped backwards on to the crowd and glided around serenely before riding back onto stage. This time there was no repeat of the fate of Ricky Ramirez, as a hundred hungry hands jostled eagerly to carry him.
Foals continue their UK tour and play Leeds with Metronomy on 5th October.
