Foals - Interview - 29/10/2010

Foals
Wednesday, 3rd November 2010
The Foals are back with a new album and a new UK tour, kicking off at the O2 Academy in Leeds. The Yorker managed to catch up with guitarist Jimmy Smith to talk the album, drunken antics and tour bus habits

Hi Jimmy, how are you? Yeah alright, just finished breakfast [It’s half two in the afternoon].

Looking forward to opening your new tour tonight? Definitely, it’ll be amazing I think. The new album should be really good and we haven’t played a venue this big for ages so it should be a lot of fun.

Does it ever go wrong when you’re on stage Oh yeah all the time! It just depends on to what degree it goes wrong. Like, it can be a bum note that no-one notices or you can fall on your face, which is pretty bad.

What’s the most embarrassing that’s ever happened to you on tour? Umm, probably just that; falling flat on my face in front of loads of people on stage. Not in a cool way either, not like “Oh I’m just throwing myself around,” rock ‘n’ roll kind of way. I just slipped on a wet patch. Yannis fell over a monitor the other day and that was pretty funny. It was like watching an episode of “You’ve Been Framed.”

Have you enjoyed your US tour? Yeah, immensely. It’s been amazing. Just very long though, like five and a half weeks in a van going across America.

Who’s the worst behaved when you’re on the van? I’d like to say we’re all pretty badly behaved. There’s annoying stuff like Yannis sits with his elbows sticking out, which doesn’t sound like much but when it’s twelve hours driving. But we’re all pretty civilised. But if someone starts being trouble it sets us all off!

And who’s the worst when you get off the bus? Definitely Yannis [laughs]. We all give him a run for his money but he’s just pipping us to the post.

What’s the most embarrassing you’ve ever done when drunk? I can’t possibly tell you that.

Will you be going out tonight to celebrate the new tour? Yeah I hope so! Start the tour off with a massive hangover. It’s sort of a Foals tradition! I think one of our friends is having a house party so we’ll probably try and crash that.

I wish the Foals would crash my house parties! I don’t know if your house would survive!

So are you guys planning on doing the festivals this summer? Not that I know of. There’s one in America we’ll try and get to but we don’t really have any plans for summer yet, think we’ll be trying to get going with the new record. I’m sure we’ll do a few but nowhere near as many dates as we did this summer. A few choice picks! I’d like to do Bestival again, it’s a really cool festival and we haven’t done that one for a while or there’s some pretty big European festivals that I haven’t been to which are supposed to be pretty amazing.

Who’d been in your ideal crowd if you played at a festival? Well I can’t remember parties like this summer – they’ve been amazing! Or the Reading and Leeds crowds. There’s something about it that just makes it fucking crazy. I guess it’s ‘cause it’s getting to the end of summer and everyone’s having one last party.

What are your plans for the rest of the afternoon? Well I’m going to finish my coffee, go back and do a sound check for a couple of hours and hang out with our friends Pet Moon who’re on tour with us, haven’t seen them for a long time.

I’d recommend Tropical World, it’s meant to be a good laugh. Tropical world? Awesome. Is it hot? I’ve been in America and come back on Monday and it’s suddenly winter so I might have to go and hang out in Tropical World actually.

The live show that night was incredible. It got quite subdued towards the middle of the set but the band had the capability to get the energy back up within a song. And Jimmy was nothing but lovely. And he only swore once.
