Daft Punk - Tron Legacy

Daft Punk - Tron Legacy
Wednesday, 15th December 2010
When it was announced that Daft Punk, the legendarily cool French electronic duo would be working on the soundtrack to the new Tron film, I and most of the internet went into spasms of joy. However, this album is most definitely not a typical Daft Punk Album – there is no song here like 'Harder Better Faster Stronger'. Instead Daft Punk magnify their intensity to create something more befitting for the cinema.

The first thing to say is that I have not yet seen the film, it being unavailable in UK cinemas at the time of writing, so I am unsure of how the songs interact with the movie. Daft Punk has obvious taken a few cues from Hans Zimmer – songwriter to films such as The Dark Knight and Inception. The songs are loud, something my tinny Mac couldn’t capture in all its glory. If you have an adequate bass system, you’ll perhaps be able to capture all the deep reverberations but this is a soundtrack that has to be heard as it was intended, in the cinema. So that’s the weekend sorted.

By far the best song is ‘Derezzed’, containing a looping electronic beat that recalls ‘Da Funk’ off their earlier albums. It’s the closest to ‘old’ Daft Punk this album gets. There is a heavy use of non-electronic music, such as strings, used to great effect on the song ‘Outlands’. In the song ‘Adagio for Tron’, the strings create a melancholic mood that is quite something, changing its slow pace halfway through to create a dark urgency with an insistent electronic undertone. A dark compelling piece, it surely hints at future projects.

This is a well put together soundtrack. It obviously is removed a few degrees by being associated with the new Tron film but I think that it can stand on its own merits. The album would definitely help with say, an all-nighter for an essay. If you’re wondering what to get your nerdy brother for Christmas, you might just have found it.
