The mixed tape. It’s a classic gift, and many this Valentine’s Day will be choosing to express themselves through music. However, the process of making a mixed tape, as immortalised by Rob Gordon in High Fidelity, is a delicate thing. You need to set the mood, choose your songs carefully so it doesn’t sound cheap and artificial and, of course, perfect the order. Avoiding the usual heavily over-played love songs that will doubtless be assailing our ears today, here’s a selection of tracks that are beautiful in their simplicity, heartfelt honesty and disarming charm.
