A Valentine's Day mixed tape

Mix tape
Monday, 14th February 2011

The mixed tape. It’s a classic gift, and many this Valentine’s Day will be choosing to express themselves through music. However, the process of making a mixed tape, as immortalised by Rob Gordon in High Fidelity, is a delicate thing. You need to set the mood, choose your songs carefully so it doesn’t sound cheap and artificial and, of course, perfect the order. Avoiding the usual heavily over-played love songs that will doubtless be assailing our ears today, here’s a selection of tracks that are beautiful in their simplicity, heartfelt honesty and disarming charm.

1. Made-Up Lovesong #43 – Guillemots

2. If You Find Yourself Caught In Love – Belle and Sebastian

3. Heartbeat Chilli – Allo Darlin’

4. These Young Hearts – Patch William [Video unavailable. But you'll find the song on spotify]

5. Citrus – The Hold Steady

6. Secret Little Sweetheart – Standard Fare [Once again youtube fails me. Spotify.]

7. Heavy Metal Drummer – Wilco

8. Someone To Share My Life With – Jens Lekman

9. Walking After You – Foo Fighters

10. Lucy – The Divine Comedy

11. Gentle Hour – Yo La Tengo

12. Sea of Love – Cat Power
