Miles Kane - Duchess 08/05/11

Miles Kane
Friday, 20th May 2011
Miles Kane, (for those of you unfamiliar), has many guises, some of which describe him better than others. At this very moment in time however, “the busiest man in live music” would depict this former Rascal and part-time Shadow Puppet quite nicely.

After a string of sell out support dates all over Europe with Liam Gallagher's Beady Eye, proving there is no rest for the wicked, Miles finds him self on the road again just a few days later. This time however, Miles’ name is quite rightly at the top of the bill, promoting his recently released and eagerly anticipated debut solo album; The Colour of the Trap. With dates on his own album tour as well as various festival spots being constantly added, Miles’ live career shows no signs of slowing down in the immediate future.

Sunday 8th May saw Miles and his band land in York for a sold out show in depths of The Duchess. Having not seen Miles since the winter of 2009, I was there to find out just how impressive this ever increasingly popular scouse lad was live, this time though without his bosom buddy and Arctic Monkey’s frontman, Alex Turner.

After some rather impressive (though hungover) support from Sheffield’s Mabel Love, the crowd seemed more than sufficiently warmed up. From the moment Miles took to the stage, a surge of excitement was evident along with a lovely warmth in the reception that this Sunday night Duchess crowd offered their headliner. After a few words of thanks for making the effort and 'trekking out' on a Sunday night as Miles himself put it, the boys ripped through the twelve track album. Although the response was warm and enthusiastic throughout, crowd-wise they appeared to out do themselves when the already fan-favorite tracks such as 'Rearrange', 'Come Closer' and 'Inhaler' reared their heads. As the band strummed their last chord of 'Inhaler' to close the set, Miles re-iterated his earlier gratitude to a 'stunner of a Sunday night crowd'.

If you like what you’re hearing from Mr Kane and his debut album, I urge you to catch him live sooner rather than later. Not only will you not regret it musically, but this year may be the last opportunity you get to catch him in smaller intimate venues such as The Duchess.

Miles Kanes debut solo album The Colour of the Trap is available now.
