James Arden checks out the garage rockers latest album.
The Christian rock band from Brighton bring religion to the masses.
Recipe for modern R'n'B album: liberal helpings of guest rappers and an overdose of sexual euphemisms.
The four man band from Newbury stepped onto northern soil on the 20th May during their second UK tour this year. Formed in 2009, the group has quickly found solid ground with their sounds that both lyrically and melodiously work well, whilst maintaining the reckless aggression of rock. Rising as quickly as they are, with one album out and a second on the way, a live tour was no doubt due.
Curious to see how the unsigned band from Newbury would turn out at a live venue I went to Fibbers with sincere interest. The supporting bands did a good job to stir up the crowd (albeit a rather small one that night) with Echoes being of particular note prior to Francesqa’s own appearance.
As the headline act set up for their performance there was a noticeable buzz from the audience that gradually grew as time ticked by and it was with a good deal of noise that Francesqa were greeted onto the stage where they performed their single 'All I Had' as their opener. This recently released track was exactly the right tune to start the night with and what with the eagerness of the band I was sure I was in for a good night. And this turned out to be true. Performing other tracks from their album We Lived, 'Come Find Me' and 'Years' were particular crowd pleasers with catchy lyrics and a quick pulse booming throughout the small layout.
Halfway through their act the lead singer Ashley Wilkie was handed a guitar and the crowd were treated to an entirely different style of song that you would usually get from Francesqa. A taster of their upcoming album, they performed the more lyrical song 'October'; both a refreshing and welcome respite to their other energetic songs and it appeared one of the better songs of the night.
As to the band themselves; they were attentive to the crowd and kept them noticeably well entertained throughout the evening, with half proudly wearing the Francesqa T-shirt. Leaving, I was even more impressed with the band then I had been before I entered and it was an experience I would happily repeat.
