Heard Here First: New Crystal Dolls

NCD
Thursday, 26th May 2011
New Crystal Dolls are a three piece American band, hailing from New York City. Their pop rock music is upcoming stuff that deserves much more attention than is being generated. Formed in 2009, the band have already released a self-titled debut EP featuring five tracks, have ventured on promo tours around America and have gone on to be featured in playlists for stores such as Hollister despite not being signed to any label.

Cementing their place in the music world, their promotional material is a fast paced tour through different rock influences. Most recognised of these is probably ‘Put A Rush On It’; a pop piece that may sound slightly 90s boyband in cheesy lyrics, but with its electronica derivations, it is certainly a feel-good summer track, charting fast romance when you “jump city to city” as a musician.

Contrasting with this, softer ‘Grenada’ is led by piano and plucked guitar chords that really serve to highlight a certain fragility in the band’s vocal ability. The chorus infuses a slight rock element, which is at odds with the feel of the song and yet denotes the band’s wish to be a quirky pop act, that are just as relevant as they are fresh. The smooth keyboard of ‘One Of These Days’ adds to the nostalgic idea of not appreciating youth and ‘Piece of Mind’ talks of overcoming a lost relationship.

The trio have a certain flare for mixing soft ballad with an infusion of rock: many of their songs feature a solo for electric guitar half way through. Often, the riffs are quite staggered, yet quite measured in that they do not overtake what are heart-felt songs. Indeed, the band aim at quite a diverse range of young people: NCD tackle rock’n’roll lifestyle and losing love whilst making references to Lady Gaga and Sean Kingston in their material.

Although the band may not break any conventions of the genre, their releases show quite a solid start and potential to offer tracks across the wide spectrum of pop music, having already incorporated keyboard, piano, guitar and synths into their work. Quite soothing music in the main, here is a band whose material should be investigated further.
