Last Friday’s much celebrated union between Prince William and Catherine Middleton held special meaning for the University of York, as music composed by two of the University’s former graduates were performed at the Royal Wedding.
Duncan Stubbs’ composition “Valiant and Brave” was played by the Central Band of the RAF during the ceremony, while Mealor’s anthem “Ubi Caritas et Amor” was performed by the Choir of Westminster Abbey and the Choir of Her Majesty’s Royal Chapel, St James’ Palace.
Mealor’s “Ubi Caritas et Amor”, originally performed as “Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal” at the premiere in St. Andrews in October 2010, was personally picked by the Duke and Duchess for the Royal Wedding. Mealor then rewrote the song to the text of “Ubi Caritas et Amor” for the ceremony.
Speaking to the Yorker, Mealor said, “That piece [“Ubi Caritas et Amor”] will always be close to me as it was written for the future Kind and Queen … [and] the words … reflect my own deep faith – “Where there is charity and love, God is there.”
According to Mealor, the song also had the “largest audience” his music will ever have – 2.5 billion.
Mealor’s publisher, University of York Music Press (UYMP) told the Yorker, “[We are] absolutely delighted that his [Mealor’s] anthem “Ubi Caritas et Amor” was chosen for the Royal Wedding.”
Describing success as “something that’s felt from within”, Mealor went on to say, “The only obstacle to achieving that [true success] is oneself; if you can master yourself, success follows.”
To aspiring composers, Mealor had the same advice given to him by his former tutor and Emeritus Professor of Music at York, Nicola LeFanu, “Don’t be fooled into following fashions or fads … always do it to the best of your abilities … [and] write the music you hear in your inner ear.”
Mealor and Stubbs graduated from York in 1997 and 1982 respectively. Mealor is currently a Reader in Composition at the University of Aberdeen, while Stubbs is principle director of music for RAF Music Services.
