Things to know
1] Meet York Sport President Sam Asfahani
As York Sport President, Sam is in charge of running all sports-related activities at the university, with the help of the York Sport Committee. He is a very keen American Footballer and can often be found training with the team, York Centurions.
2] Where to find 22 acres
It’s hard to miss the huge, green fields but it’s surprising how many people don’t know what or where 22 acres is when they get to York. So, 22 acres is the group of fields just across the road from the university’s gym centre and is where teams train and play.
3] York Sport Membership
York Sport Membership is required to join any sports club. At £40 it isn’t cheap but it does give you sports centre membership, reduced court-hire rates and gym membership, free fitness sessions and drinks deals.
The Must-dos
1] Try something new
The University of York has over 59 sports clubs so don’t just go for the usual ones that everyone picks. Be daring and try something different, like Ultimate Frisbee or Capoeira! Check here http://www.yusu.org/sport/clubs to see what clubs are on offer.
2] Be prepared to suffer
You’re in the North now, so prepare yourself for rain, hail, sleet and snow! Training and matches continue in most weather conditions so expect to go home from a few sessions with frozen body parts and cursing the heavens.
3] Get involved in BUCS
Most of York’s sports teams take part in BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport), competing against universities across the country. So if you can, get onto a university sports and help York climb in the BUCS standings! Find out more about BUCS on their website http://www.bucs.org.uk.
The Don’t-dos
1] Don’t underestimate the importance of Roses or Varsity
These two annual competitions, the first against Lancaster and the second against Hull, are HUGE at York so make sure you go in fighting and prepared to give blood, sweat and tears for the White Rose.
2] Your college needs you too
While everyone wants to play at university level, don’t forget there’s college sport too! College teams compete in leagues and one-day tournaments throughout the year in a variety of sports and the year culminates with College Sports Day and crowning the winners of the Inter-College Cup.
3] Don’t miss the York Sport Dinner
At the annual York Sport Dinner in Summer Term, Sports Colours are awarded to players for contribution and awards are given to the year’s best teams. Don’t miss this event – it’s always a great evening.
