In the men’s draw, six seeds were defeated, including Melzer (8) and Davydenko (28), in matches they would have hoped to win.
Victories for Nadal, Fish, Soderling, Murray, Federer, Monfils and Djokovic sees the top seeds continue to the third round but they will be more wary now of their opposition after this eye-opening second round.
Only three seeded female players were knocked out but this included the huge casualty of second second, Kim Clijsters.
Wozniacki, Zvonareva, Jankovic, Schiavone, Li and Sharapova all progressed to the next round, ensuring the draw still contains many high-seeded players.
The Yorker looks at some highlights from the second round:
Shock of the round
This has to be Clijsters’ premature exit. After playing well in the first round, she started well in the second round too and looked on course to progress after taking the first set 6-3. Clijsters then held a 5-2 lead in the second set but after some fantastic play from her Dutch opponent, Rus, she lost the set 7-5. Rus went on to win the final set, and the match, as Clijsters’ game collapsed. So the world number two makes an early exit from the competition and all eyes will now be on Rus, a former junior world number one, to see how far she can go.
Match of the round
Roger Federer defeated his French opponent Teixeira 6-3, 6-0, 6-2 in just under an hour and a half. Although the game wasn’t spectacular, or at least not by Federer’s high standards, it was a great display from the number three seed as he demolished the opposition and reminds us he won’t let Nadal or Djokovic win the title easily.
Outfit of the round
Arantxa Rus sported a vivid outfit for her match against Clijsters – perhaps this is what distracted Clijsters’ concentration!
Coming up
Novak Djokovic takes on Juan Martin Del Potro in the third round and this should be a fantastic match. After his opponent withdrew injured in the previous round, Djokovic has had a fairly easy passage so far but this will be a tough test. Del Potro, seeded 25th, reached the semi-finals of the French Open in his last appearance there in 2009, in the same year he won the US Open. Although he has dropped down the rankings since then, his power and pace will no doubt trouble Djokovic and make for a thrilling encounter.
