Vanbrugh defeated last term’s winners, Goodricke, 5-4 in their final match of the term on Tuesday evening to secure their position at the top of the table with 47 points, after only losing to James this term. This is a huge improvement on their sixth position finish last term.
James College finished in second place with 39 points, followed by Derwent in third on 36. The table remains close, however, with only three points separating third and seventh. Vanbrugh’s victory also sees them jump six points clear of James at the top of the yearly league table, which sees all the terms’ results combined.
Vanbrugh co-captain Emma Howarth told The Yorker “the team’s played really well and put in some great performances.” Co-captain Frances Bennett added “It also feels great that we've improved on last term's results.”
They were both cautious about celebrating their position at the top of the yearly table too soon though: “it could be an upset for college darts to take the overall win off Goodricke who have won it for the last three years, but there’s still a long way to go” said Bennett.
They revealed their plans for the next term are just to keep practising and enjoying themselves so they hopefully keep on winning. The highlight of term was “seeing us progress as a team getting stronger and better” Howarth said.
The term’s matches saw some impressive individual play: Alex Harrison of Alcuin once again topped the high scores table, hitting 13 scores over 100, three over 140 and a 180. He also hit the quickest legs of the term – 17, 19 and 20, followed closely by Andy Ralston of Goodricke with 22. Goodricke’s captain Andy Myhill also scored highly, hitting 15 scores over 100 and two over 140. The women’s quickest finish was claimed by Zoe Paine of Goodricke, with 22 darts, and Halifax’s Ewen McDonald checked-out an impressive 113.
Goodricke have won the overall title for the last two years and won’t want to lose it this year after topping the table at the start of the year. Vanbrugh will have to fight hard to maintain their place at the top and, with the table so tight, next term promises to be an exciting one.
