Lancaster strikes first as Roses 2011 gets underway

Cricket Uni
Charlie Alsop bowls for York
Thursday, 12th May 2011
The battle for the 2011 Roses began today, and Lancaster came out of the day with a four point lead taking 6 points compared to York’s 2.

The main game of the day took place on 22 Acres where UYCC (University of York Cricket Club) Second XI took on their Lancastrian counterparts. York batted first and posted a moderate score of 213. The stand out innings of the day came from opening batsman Nihal Patel who hit a scintillating 77 off just 59 balls. He was ably supported by Ben Cooke who made 44, and the other notable innings’ came from Charlie Alsop (34) and Will Smith (29 not out). Whilst 213 may not have been a brilliant score, it was certainly competitive and gave the White Rose bowlers a chance.

Lancaster set about their chase with blistering pace, and raced to 75-0 after just 15 overs. Again however, panic set in during the middle part of their innings and the York bowlers reduced them to 169-6. Wickets were shared around between the bowlers, with Ben Bartlett, Dave Brunyard and Andreas Papadolambakis gaining 2 each. Sadly however, the Lancaster lower order showed good composure towards the end of the innings, and despite York applying pressure, they managed to reach their target with four overs to go and claim a crucial 2 points.

In the day’s other competition, Lancaster took 4 points from the equestrian event compared to York’s 2 points.

Tomorrow sees Roses 2011 take off properly. 29 points will be up for grabs in events such as cricket, indoor hockey and ultimate frizbee. Tomorrow’s main event will undoubtedly be the men’s first rugby match at Huntingdon Stadium, which will take place in front of a huge crowd. While Lancaster will be happy with their work today, York will know that it is what happens tomorrow and on Saturday that will make or break their Roses campaign. Game on.
