York produce a late rally as Roses Friday comes to an end

Rugby men's 1sts
Saturday, 14th May 2011
If the early part of the day had all York fans worried, there was no need to panic as a late rally in the cricket and rugby brought eight valuable points home for the White Rose. York still trail 15.5 to 21.5, but with big points to play for tomorrow, anything could happen. The Yorker takes a look back at the day and gives you our key moments from Roses Friday 2011.

Result of the day – Men’s Firsts Rugby - York 30 – 8 Lancaster

No real surprises here. York’s Rugby 1sts played a superb game tonight in front of a packed Huntingdon Stadium. The boys were very sharp and thoroughly deserved their win. The first half was quite a tense affair, with each side being less expressive and seemingly more worried about not making a mistake than taking risks to gain a first half lead. However, York sprang into life in the second half, running the ball from deep with blistering pace that proved too much for the Lancaster defence to cope with. I commented at half time that whoever had a word with the boys during the break certainly said something that hit home, because they looked like a different team during the second half.

Lancaster came with a game plan to win ugly, and in the first half it looked like it would work. However, York’s skill in the second half wasn’t only physical, but they played clever rugby, running excellent lines and creating space for the backs to work in. A top night all round, excellent for York, and possibly psychologically damaging for Lancaster going into the rest of the weekend.

Disappointment of the day – American Football – York 6 – 18 Lancaster

This afternoon proved to be a frustrating one for the York Centurions at they went down 18-6 to their Lancastrian counterparts. Two early touchdowns for Lancaster set the tone for the game, and it proved difficult for York to get a foothold in the game once Lancaster were ahead. Both sides made mistakes during the game, but York’s mistakes proved to be more costly because they were made at key times. A bad day for the Centurions, especially as they beat Lancaster in the corresponding BUCS fixture earlier in the season.

Funny moment of the day – The streaker during the Men’s First Rugby game

There was a streaker that invaded the pitch before the 2nd half kicked off in the Men’s First’s Rugby. Enough said.
