In the men’s draw, Verdasco (16), Youzhny (12) and Garcia-Lopez (30) all fell to unseeded opponents as the good play of the underdogs continues, as in the second round.
Great Britain’s Andy Murray booked his place in the fourth round after a 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Berrer. Despite picking up an ankle injury during the game, Murray triumphed and this sees all four top seeds in through to the next round.
In the women’s draw, seeds Stosur (8) and Kanepi (16) lost to unseeded opponents. There were no problems however for defending champion Schiavone (5), who progressed to the fourth round after her opponent Peng retired.
There will be no further appearances however for Rus, whom all were eagerly watching after her victory over Clijsters in the previous round. A 6-1, 6-1 loss to Kirilenko (25) sees her leave the competition but there will doubtless be much to come from her in the future.
Match of the round
Wawrinka (14) vs Tsonga (17) 4-6, 6-7, 7-6, 6-2, 6-3: things looked good for Tsonga as the Frenchmen took a two set lead, to the delight of the home crowd. However, Wawrinka fought back and after winning the nervy third set tie-break, he dominated the final two sets to complete a fantastic turn-around.
Shock of the round
Wozniacki (1) loses to Hantuchova (28) 6-1, 6-3: the number one seed lost in straight sets and seemed powerless to stop her opponent, who played very well. Wozniacki will have to wait a little longer for her first Grand Slam title.
Coming up in the Men’s
Gasquet – Djokovic: this promises to be a great match as Djokovic, one of the tournament’s favourites, meets home favourite Gasquet. Expect long and exciting rallies in a thrilling match.
Coming up in the Women’s
Jankovic – Schiavone: Jankovic is just returning to a good streak of form after being plagued by injuries but she will have a tough game against the defending champion, Schiavone, and it should be a great contest.
Sportsman of the round
Berrer: admitted he stopped playing drop shots against Murray as he felt uncomfortable playing an injured player – Great Britain thanks you, Berrer!
