Vanbrugh hasn’t won the cup for seven years but lost only once this term to finish top of the league.
Co-captains Frances Bennett and Emma Howarth told of the Yorker of their delight at lifting the trophy. Bennett said: “It feels really great. Not only have people worked hard but we've seen improvement from everyone over the year.”
Victory wasn’t sealed until the final match of the season however, as James College was still able to catch Vanbrugh mathematically.
Their 7-2 win wasn’t good enough though to overtake Vanbrugh, who won 6-3 to seal the title by just one point.
Howarth revealed: “We were all very nervous as we couldn’t do anything about it but it was worth the wait.”
“We want to try to keep our trophy next year now!”
“ We're not losing anyone from our team next year and we hope to bring in new people too,” Bennett added.
Nick Hall, University of York Darts Chairman, reflected on the college darts over the last three terms: “It's been really competitive and to have three different colleges win each term’s league is an amazing reflection on the campus wide quality of darts.”
“Someone from almost every college has represented the university this year as well: it's a great reflection on the work and effort put in by teams and individuals.”
The University of York Darts team has had great success this year, beating local rivals Leeds in the final of the UDUK University Cup. The university also hosted the nationwide darts singles competition, attracting over 100 students from across the country.
Roses brought controversy, as the matches were delayed after beer was thrown over the electronic equipment. Although the matches did get underway eventually, York lost narrowly but Hall insisted “we've not let that stand in our way.”
“To top it all off, we're up for best new society at the YUSU awards this weekend,” Hall said proudly.
Darts is going from strength to strength and Hall’s plans for the coming year include introducing a regular singles league, encouraging more women to get involved and improving and varying training methods for all players.
