Button wins Hungarian Grand Prix

button
Wednesday, 3rd August 2011
Jenson Button won a rain-affected Hungary Grand Prix on Sunday in his ongoing bid to stay in touch with current world champion Sebastian Vettel. With eight races to go and a maximum 200 points up for grabs, Vettel has 234 points and is nearly a hundred clear of Mark Webber, Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button.

Button was able to celebrate his entry to the 200 club in style as he grabbed his second Grand Prix of the season, but teammate Lewis Hamilton had another frustrating afternoon. Hamilton pitted six times, including a drive-through penalty, attempting to get his tyre strategy right, but it ultimately cost him the race. He was able to pass Mark Webber and finish fourth, but the 2008 world champion was less than impressed in the post-race interview, a sight which has become all too familiar this season.

Vettel finished second in what was a quiet race by his standards, and Fernando Alonso took the last place on the podium, despite getting stuck behind the two slower Mercedes going into the first corner. Alonso had made the same mistake as Hamilton in going for soft tyres over the prime option just before the rain came, but was able to remedy the issue by pitting again.

Next stop on tour will be the Belgian Grand Prix held at the incredibly challenging Spa race track on August 28th, and despite the frustrations we’ve seen Lewis Hamilton endure this year, there have been glimmers of hope at the German and Chinese Grands Prix. I’m going to tip Hamilton to win at Spa as I think the course will favour his aggressive, free-flowing racing style, and the McLaren car has been catching up to the Red Bulls in recent weeks. Fingers crossed for dry weather…
