The Yorker's sports team says what they would like for Christmas this year
The second blog for The Yorker from the University of York Riding Club
JT: How are you finding your second term as York Sport president so far?
SA:Different! It's nice to feel comfortable and confident in the position, and hopefully this will mean that I can help clubs as much as possible rather that worrying about the job.
JT: What are you most looking forward to about the upcoming year for York Sport?
SA: Just all the projects that are happening. From the York Sports Village to the potential removal of York Sport Membership, there is so much going on, and it feels like I dont have time to stop and breathe. That's the way I love to work.
JT: What do you think will be the biggest change for sport at York this year as opposed to last year?
SA: We have a new Head of Sports at York, Keith Morris. He is extremely student focused and experienced in the field. Its good to have someone high up in the university that is on the same page as us at York Sport, and this well really help progress.
JT: How is the development of the new Sports Centre on Hes East progressing?
SA: Its going great with building work having already started. I believe the projected completion date is July 2012, so unfortunately I'm going to miss it but it's good to know all the hard work that has been put in over the years is finally coming to life.
JT: Will York Sport membership become cheaper this year for students?
SA: We are still negotiating about York Sport Membership for next year. For now it remains the same, but we have managed to remove College Sport Membership fees.
JT: As well as developing sport at university level, do you have plans to improve college sport? And what are they?
SA: College Sport is vital and as well as the fees mentioned above, we have put in a bid for over £140,000 of funding for College Sport from Sport England. This will fund a full time staff member to help with its running, as well as expanding sports such as football which is oversuscribed, improving raquet sports and introducing women's football and men's rugby onto campus.
JT: What is your highest priority for York Sport this year?
SA: The removal of York Sport Membership. This problem has plagued us for years, and I dont want to leave without getting rid of it.
JT: How would you like your time as York Sport President to be remembered by students in the future?
SA: They could always name the 3G pitch after me on Hes East! But honestly, I just hope my passion and love for sport came across and that students will feel that I've made some sort of positive contribution to their time here, no matter how small.
JT: What would be your one piece of advice for new students with regards to sport at York?
SA: Get involved at any level with any sport. My friends who have graduated all complain about how hard it is to try new sports after uni. There is never going to be a cheaper or easier chance to try so many great sports and meet so many people.
