James Tompkinson reviews an excellent pre-season victory for the York City Knights against Yorkshire rivals Leeds Rhinos
Having not won in their first five BUSA matches, the York Netball 2nds stepped on court last week with determination, but in desperate need of a confidence boost.
York dominated the match from the first blow of the whistle, with a magnificent display of solidarity from the defence. Jess Shepherd and Grace Marsden proved unbreakable in a first quarter in which Bradford failed to score. However, whilst playing against the obviously less experienced side, York had to work hard in order to play their own game and not slow down too much and sink to the opposition's standard.
As the game progressed, the mid-court players continually made excellent interceptions in order to once again break the majority of Bradford’s centres, whilst creating many scoring opportunities for the attack. Despite a few unforced mistakes throughout the team, the shooters converted a large proportion of these chances into goals and the score difference quickly increased even more.
Entering the last quarter of the match winning 35-4, York had to maintain excellent consistency to hold onto the score they deserved. Bradford's star player worked relentlessly in defence but York weren't about to sit complacently. Once again with a solid defence and continually excellent feeds into attack from captain Katie Smith - earning her player of the match - York increased their score to an impressive 44-7.
The morale-boosting result will help the team's confidence as they look forward to similar successes in the near future.
