Party Safe week deemed success by York students

Bottles of Drink
Party Safe - promoting safe drinking
Sunday, 9th December 2007
Party Safe, a campaign carried out by student representatives in York, sees a successful week of raising awareness about safety on nights out.

The Party Safe project involved group initiatives by student representatives from York University, York St John’s University, York College and Askham Bryan College. The campaign, which ran from the 3rd to the 7th of December, saw YUSU officers dressed in bright pink t-shirts give out anti drink spikers and bottles of water to people on nights out in York town.

YUSU Welfare Officer, Grace Fletcher-Hall, felt that the week was a success in raising awareness about safety on nights out and had gone down well with students.

She said “I found the vast majority of students I spoke to while going around bars and clubs this week, were very concerned about drink safety and appreciated the efforts made by us and by the bars themselves to keep them safe”

The Yorker asked some students what they thought about the campaign.

One student said “I think it really good, especially the anti drink spiker things. I don’t leave my drinks unattended but it’s good to have them especially as there’s been quite a few spiking recently.”

Another said that he felt it was a good thing to raise awareness about. He said “just something as simple as taking your drink with you and not leaving it on the bar could make the difference between a good night, and a bad one”
