Un-cooking believable!

Sunday, 13th January 2008
Students are still having to make do with insufficient cooking facilities, despite the problem originating from late 2006.

Students living in the A block of Le Page court continue to live with inadequate kitchen facilities, containing only a microwave oven, toaster, water boiler and two fridge freezers.

Over 90 students reside in the self catered Le Page court and have to share the 4 ovens that are available to them; a situation that many students feel is a far cry from what should be provided by the university.

They were removed by the university following newly introduced fire and safety regulations.

Kate Taylor, a student currently living in Le Page court, said: “If we want to cook a meal and bring it down to our floor to eat then we have to cover the pans etc with plates so that the steam doesn't set off the fire alarms on the way downstairs.”

Should the alarms be triggered, the fire service is called out irrespective of cause. A charge is also incurred by the university as a result of the call out.

According to previous statements made by the university, improvements to the cooking facilities were due to be completed by January 15 2007.

These improvements were intended to have made the installation of hobs in all insufficiently equipped kitchens possible.

Would this problem be in halls that are designated as "catered" by any chance?

"Over 90 students reside in the self catered Le Page court"
