Viking Raid: It's on and with no vote

Viking Raid
Raiders will be relieved
Monday, 14th January 2008
A YUSU officer has confirmed this morning that People and Planet have opted for a last minute settlement to save Viking Raid.

Societies and Communications Officer Sam Bayley told The Yorker in the early hours that People and Planet Society have added Starworld, a new t-shirt company to their ethical list.

Bayley said that the company was one which YUSU may be able to use save Viking Raid and freeze prices.

People and Planet Society were given the powers to decide which t-shirt companies YUSU were and weren't allowed to use in an Union General Motion (UGM) last year.

The planned Extraordinary General Meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, has therefore been cancelled and UGM voting for new policy will be held in Week 5.

Whilst Joey Ellis, YUSU Student Development and Charities Officer, said she felt "relieved" by the outcome, Bayley said the news may only be good for the short term, and said he had concerns about People and Planet being able to "change purchasing policy at will".

Matt Burton said he was "confident he could make the budget work without putting up ticket prices".

The Viking Raid fiasco began when YUSU admitted the Raid could not go ahead with the current ethical list.

What does sam bayley mean? we voted that p&p could change the purchasing policy at will. we voted that way for a reason and if yusu had done their job properly we would have known all the negative (and positive!) consequences.

I agree with Sam. I think to give an affiliate a decision on YUSU purchasing policy could be a massive issue and is one that needs to be looked at. Why externalise the decisions made by an organisation such as YUSU when there are internal mechanisms in place to deal with them?

I agree with #2, moving SU decision making to a body outside the SU is never a good idea

It seems a strange idea to charge students more for T shirts. Its a nice idea, but students aren't the correct audience to target about this. When I am older I am planning on living in a more enviornmentally and socially better way, but whilst I'm a student I want to keep costs down

Anyone else suitably confused about the naming of the current Viking Raid?

We've had the Viking Raid, Viking Raid II, Freshers' Raid and now the Viking Raid 2. Eh?
