Cheeky student wins £100 for experiment he never finished

Cash machine
'Mr X' is laughing all the way to the bank
Monday, 28th January 2008
A wily student won a £100 prize for taking part in an experiment that he didn't turn up to.

The third year, who asked only to be identified as 'Mr X', walked away with the cash ahead of around twenty other participants.

The test, run by the centre for experimental economics, is designed to see how random people can cooperate to make the most money.

The invitaton to take part offers a £5 show up fee and the prospect of earning anything between nothing and £150 depending on the decisions taken in a questionnaire by random pairs of participants.

It adds: "The exact amount will depend on your choices, the choices of others, and luck."

The "lucky" student in question said: "I got there at 1pm but I had an exam at half past and the dude said it wasn't a problem.

"I got £5 for turning up and he told me he'd put me in the prize draw anyway. I got £101.60 if you want to be specific."

"I would feel guilty but I went down and I was pretty apologetic and the dude was pretty good natured so in a way it was me helping him out."

He plans to spend his cash windfall on a surfing holiday in Portugal during the Easter holidays.

Details of how to join the scheme can be found here

The confusing instructions can take several reads.

Our winning student added: "I'm a maths and linguistics student so that was fairly easy for me."

Asked about the second part though, he added: "I'm still a bit unclear about that. I haven't got a clue!"
