A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
The recommendation was announced at a Bar Strategy meeting on Wednesday held between Bar and Licensing Officer, Phil Kember, and Allen Warren, Vanbrugh Provost and all College Chairs and YUSU Representatives.
Halifax President, David Sharp told The Yorker that a recommendation was made to close JJ's at Easter, and Langwith at the end of the academic year.
It follows an investigation into whether Campus Bars were economically viable.
The Halifax College Students Association (HCSA) has launched a petition and a Facebook group to show that Halifax students want the bar and it's attached pizzeria, to remain open.
He said, "We were always worried that it may be under review due to low turnout, because they think that students didn't care if we had one or not."
I think we've plenty of reasons JJs should stay open, even though it is losing money, its providing a service to Halifax students.
In the two days since the petition was launched it has attracted over 130 signatures.
"This shows that even those who don't go, still want it. It's a service to all students."
"I think we've plenty of reasons JJs should stay open, even though it is losing money, its providing a service to Halifax students."
The decision was based simply on economic factors, although Sharp says that the Bar's takings are actually increasing.
"Halifax bar is beating the national trend as we have had a sales increase. It's actually on the up since we got our new Bar Manager, Joe. He's done no end of good. He's organised the Ricky Hatton fight event and the Bar Quiz, he's really keen to see it keep going."
"I can't believe they want to shut it, it's so far away from campus, its the only thing we have and they want to close our only bar."
He admitted that whilst there is money set aside to convert the bar into a JCR for the College, he is discussing the option of using the funds to keep the Bar open.
He says one reason it suffers is due to it's lack of involvement in campus-wide events such as Access All Areas and Campus Wednesday.
I can't believe they want to shut it, it's so far away from campus, its the only thing we have and they want to close our only bar.
The Bar is left of the route of the events is to prevent drunk students crossing the main road, something that should this proposal go through, he says his students' will be forced to do every night, "Now they want this to happen every night."
The 'Save JJ's' group can be found on Facebook, whilst a copy of the petition can be found in JJ's bar.
I really don't understand how a student bar which overcharges more than the Charles and other bars can be losing money.
You're answer's there, isn't it? Why go to JJ's when you can go to The Charles for less?
It was inevitable after they were forced to cut opening times really. It's a shame though, JJs used to be great for sports.
I suppose in some repects it makes economic sense. All of the bars on campus are under yearly reviews because most just dont make enough money. For convenience and general college atmosphere JJ's is great and the cost of a pint isnt that much cheaper at the charles or the derry.
Its just another york student facility closing. this is such dissapointing news, as was the news of Your books closure. what is a college without somewhere to drink and socialise with friends? get the cans in!
The death knell for halifax as a "college". It's nothing more than a housing estate without it's own bar - devoid of spirit, visitors from other colleges and rivalry.
Unfortunately since JJs has the atmosphere of a train station, nobody is going to drink there...if there are plans to convert it to a JCR why not implement them but keep the bar open? Obviously the money for improvement is there, so why not make it a more sociable place to drink. McQs always fills up because it's like a real pub - a place to enjoy a drink and socialise. Maybe commercial services should learn from their successes.
Failing that, why don't YUSU take over JJs until they have a proper student venue on Hes East?
What's really sad about JJ's case is that it remains much cheaper than the Derry, and cheaper than the Charles every night but Monday. Inevitably buisness was going to fall after the partial closures, but it's a kick in the teeth to have total closure reckomended, when buisness is improving, and JJ's future looking rosier.
JJ's was once the JCR for Halifax college, and it seems strange that having decided at great cost to convert it into a bar, the university are going to spend even more money converting it back.
That's before you get into the welfare issues involved in making students walk to Heslington along a badly maintained, and appalingly lit track, or onto campus along a dark path besides 22 acres.
I think the best solution would be for the university to close the unpopular, and over-priced Costcutters in Halifax, which would mean less students drinking cheap booze in their kitchens, and more students becoming involved in JJ's. On top of that the university has got to make openning JJ's for all the weekend football a priority, it's crazy that we have a sports bar, which isn't open to show Premier League football. Fortunatly as the article says Joe has been really pro-active in running the bar, and we are open for longer now than ever. But, with such lack of support from the university, the final solution may have to be YUSU taking over the bar, and returning it to 7-day opening. There's no way Halifax should ever not have a bar.
One last point, is that #5 is well off the mark as regards Halifax. If Halifax is so "devoid of spirit", how come our events sell out without needing support from other colleges? not having visitors from other colleges is the best thing about Halifax because it gives us a real college spirit.

Didn't it used to show sport in there?
