Union plan to buy out struggling Langwith Bar

Wentworth Bar
Campus Bar
Thursday, 31st January 2008
York students may have their first Union run venue by October 2009.

YUSU Services and Finance Officer Matt Burton has announced plans to turn Langwith Bar into a YUSU-run bar.

The announcement comes after a Bar Strategy Meeting late last week, which recommended closing Halifax and Langwith Bars at the end of Easter and Summer terms respectively.

YUSU will enlist the support of the National Union Student Services Limited (NUSSL) who will provide supplies for the venue.

It is part of an improved campaign to encourage students to use Union-run services, such as Your:Shop.

The 'Your Union:Your Profit' campaign will aim to attract students to its bar and shops which feed all profit back into the Union.

The move, announced at YUSU Exec, will act as a test-run for a Central Venue on Hes East.

YUSU President Anne-Marie Canning said this would be a "small, manageable project".

The Union hope to secure the premises on a fixed-term, renewable lease.

Burton said that YUSU have a "proven track record in running a business".

This is despite the fact that Your:Books, one of its businesses, is to close at the end of this term. Exec was told that its closure demonstrated a good business decision as they knew when it should be closed to avoid operating at a loss.

Under the new proposals Vanbrugh, Derwent and Goodricke will continue to open at their current hours.

The report announced that Wentworth and Alcuin will continue to be under review for the next year.

Campus bars have been in decline for the past four years. Two years ago the 'Save our Bars' campaign was launched with limited success. The bars remained open, with reduced serving hours.

Congratulations YUSU, having a union-run bar will do wonders for campus life and hopefully if it's well managed the venture could show commercial services how to run a venue for students!

Having a non-political face will also be fantastic for YUSU/ student relations - and i echo the previous point about this hopefully being the first of many new ideas from the union about how to revive campus life and spirit and focus upon student entertainment.

Very promising indeed.

Thank fuck for that, it's about time we had a union run bar - might not be the best or most spacious one, but it's a good start and definitely the way to go.

  1. 4 - The union having autonomy over the running of langwith bar has the potential to fill it every night. NUSSL are a more cost-effective supplier therefore possibly cheaper drinks in langwith than in comm. serv. bars, and if the right students are in charge, hopefully they'll be able to put on promotions that will bring custom back. A bit of experience will do no harm whatsoever in preparing for hes east either!

This is great! I'm sure YUSU can do a good job of renovating Langy Bar and turning it around. With a bit of competition, hopefully some of the other campus bars will improve too.

Whilst the univeristy has been very successful in achieving deals with suppliers, the NUS has a national network of venues, and as such can fight for even greater discounts. Good luck to YUSU in running Langwith; I'm sure you'll do a great job.
