University Radio York was the second radio station and the first student radio in the country, and it is now helping York St. John University set up its own station.
All they have at the moment is a logo and a lot of ideas and one guy with a heck of a lot of drive.
York St. John’s Radio (YSJR) hopes to become one of the first student radios in a so-called ‘new university’.
Rob Watts, URY Station Manager, said it could take well over a year to complete. “All they have at the moment is a logo and a lot of ideas and one guy with a heck of a lot of drive.”
Watts was approached by YSJR Station Manager Liam Heffernan, who has since become a member of URY.
Hefferman said: “URY have simply been fantastic”.
Despite having set up the YSJR Facebook group a mere five days ago, the group already boasts almost eighty enthusiastic members who are keen to help and become involved.
Hefferman has secured support from the York St. John Student Union, although they are only likely to be able to contribute a few hundred pounds a year.
YSJR has been unsuccessful in securing help to deal with the financial difficulties of setting up a radio station. Watts said: “One thing we’ve always emphasized in our dealings with Liam has been the costs of setting up the station, which can be massive.”
