A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
The motion ‘University of York students should graduate in the Minster not in Central Hall’ has been proposed by Dan Coen, creator of the Facebook group of the same name.
In his proposing speech at Thursday’s Union General Meeting (UGM) Coen said: "Our current graduation venue has the odour of a duck's bottom, the atmosphere of David Brent’s office and the look of a high security prison."
Many students have centred their views on the aesthetic appeal of the Minster. One first year student commented: “the Minster is a much more fitting place for the occasion. It beats the concrete of Central Hall any day.”
Those against the passing of the motion have called upon the possible logistical problems which may arise from the relocation. Rich Croker, ex-YUSU President, who made a speech in opposition to the motion, said that such a move would “cause so much hassle for people”.

Tom Flynn, who was also opposing the motion, stressed the importance of Central Hall, describing it as “the centre of campus, the centre of this university”. He also highlighted the presence of ducks as an integral part of the graduation ceremony in York, and said: “You don’t get ducks in the Minster do you?”
The secular background of York University has also come up in the debate. The Minster has religious affiliations, something the university has avoided, causing some to argue the location would not be appropriate.
It has also been highlighted that the Minster would not be available during the peak tourist season. YUSU President Anne-Marie Canning pointed out: “York St. John graduates in November because that’s when they’re allowed to use the Minster.”
An alternative Facebook group has been set up advocating "the ferris wheel" (the Yorkshire Wheel) as the best graduation venue.
Voting on this motion and others is open until Thursday here'"
To confirm, if the motion passes, it doesn't mean we automatically move to the Minster for graduation ceremonies as the headline suggests - the President will just be mandated to lobby the University for the change...
Please let's not graduate at the wheel! I went there the other day and it's pretty crud.
Why can we not have central hall as a back-up and graduate on the grass near hes hall, weather permitting? I think that'd be lovely, realistic and have as many ducks as you can shake a stick at.
Its free to get into the Minster with your York Uni Card. Dont see why we need to lobby anyone? Just turn up un-mass on the day
I like the idea of an un-mass of students...it's the number of students who rsvped "Attending" on Facebook rather than the number that actually turn up ^_^
graduation on the wheel? Not that much of a spectacle with ten people in a pod.
The Hes Hall gardens area is pretty good for graduation photos, and not far from central hall!
Just noticed a new facebook group calling for graduations to happen at Efes!...certainly a student institution!
