A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
The most significant is that of whether Welfare Officer Grace Fletcher-Hackwood should be removed from her post, via a vote of no confidence, after punching student Dan Taylor during a drunken incident on campus earlier this term.
The Yorker's own poll leaves it too close to call, with only a 51% majority voting 'Yes' (at the time of publication). Her removal would be unprecedented and such a result is likely to have repercussions on the future running of YUSU.
The alternative motion called for Fletcher-Hackwood to be reprimanded, the motion of 'censure' which would mean she would retain her place.
Other upcoming results include whether men will be allowed to sit on Women's Committee and whether lobbying should begin about the location of upcoming Graduations.
Full results will appear when they are released this afternoon. Voting will be open until midday.
I really hope she goes, i'm not Dan Taylor's biggest fan and hadn't even heard of Fletcher-Hackwood before now but the way she's conducted herself in all of this (the incident and thereafter) has been so far from professional it's unreal. She would have been hung out to dry in a similar situation outside of the university bubble and sadly if she stays it will be because YUSU doesn't have a contingency plan built into the constitution rather than because people actually want her to be the person who carries on with the role.
Even if she were to win by a %-point or two, it means theoretically that a very, very large proportion of the University population have no comfidence in her ability to perform her important job as A&W Officer. She should resign unless she wins by a good 20-25%. How can she stay when almost half the population would not want to go to her with a walfare or academic issue?!
What rubbish! Plenty of elected officials (including YUSU officers) are elected by low margins, they aren't forced to resign because a large proportion of electors voted against them.
No it is different; at an election time, people are not explicitely expressing they have no-confidence in one of the candidates. They vote for one, and as much as the other may not hold their views or policies, they are still capable of carrying out the mandate of this position.
In this instance, a large proportion of the student population, many of which would previously had confidence in Grace before this incident no longer do and this is a development that cannot be tolerated.
She's out by 8 votes.
