Crime drops as union warns: protect your stuff!

Police arrive
More police = less crime, apparently
Friday, 8th February 2008
The students union has warned of a “spate of thefts” despite the announcement that crime at the university has plummeted by more than a third in the last year.

Reported crime on campus fell by 36% from 243 incidents in 2006 down to 156 in 2007.

The result has been put down to the area having its own team of police and community support officers (PCSOs) for the first time.

But recent weeks have seen a surge of robberies as thieves have apparently entered bedrooms and office blocks with ease.

Halifax student Anuradha Sajjanhar awoke to find an intruder in her room. Sajjanhar told The Yorker: "It was very scary but we were impressed by how quickly the porters dealt with the problem and got us new key-cards."

YUSU has told students to remain vigilant and revealed that patrols will be stepped up over the next few weeks to put off potential thieves.

Of the overall drop, campus enforcer PCSO Tom Rawlinson said: “It’s always a sign that things are working in terms of the partnership between ourselves and the security team at the university.”

“The reason is that we wear high visibility jackets which acts as a deterrent.”

Criminal damage had the most dramatic fall with 42 cases down to 8 last year.

Cycle theft remained the most common problem, with one bike taken every week in 2007.

Plans are also underfoot to create a monthly police drop-in service for students to get advice, but campus remains far from the ghetto.

Sergeant Andy Haigh, who oversees policing of the site, said: "The University of York was already a very, very safe place to be, but the good news is now it is even safer."

Stay tuned to The Yorker for a full breakdown of campus crime statistics coming soon.

YUSU advises students to:

  • Stop anyone from tailgating into accommodation after you
  • Don’t buzz anyone into the blocks
  • Don’t leave your bedroom door unlocked
  • Don’t prop open any doors
  • Don't leave your valuables in view
  • Keep your windows locked
