The deserted bridge
Monday, 11th February 2008
The man suspected to be carrying a bomb on the Ouse Bridge last night was apprehended by police after they incapacitated him using rubber bullets.

It was discovered that the man did not in fact carry a bomb after the Army bomb disposal unit carried out a controlled explosion of the backpack.

The 43-year-old man was put under arrest and taken to hospital to be treated for for minor injuries caused by the baton round.

A North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "The incident was brought to a safe conclusion at about 23:55 GMT when firearm officers discharged a baton round.

"The man was arrested and taken to York District Hospital where he is receiving treatment for minor injuries sustained in the incident."
