A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
A report by Elizabeth Heaps, Pro-Vice Chancellor, said: "In the long term, portering for the whole of the phase one development on Heslington East will be provided from the Hub."
College students will receive local portering until the construction of the Hub.
As the new Goodricke College will open on Heslington East before this time, once it is complete porters will be located further away.
The report continued: "The college is expected to be available before the Hub, and during that time portering support will be provided within the College Nucleus area."
Joe Clarke, Goodricke Chair, told The Yorker that feels the current plan could cause some problems. The present Goodricke students enjoy close proximity with their porters, something new arrivals are set to miss out on once the development is complete.
The porters positioning in the Hub will mean that it will be available for student use for college and social activities, and will house the JCR.
At present there is a worry that students will not have adequate porter coverage in the new Heslington East area of campus. Clarke said: “It does seem clear that one porter cannot possibly cover the whole area of phase one on campus east adequately.”
He added "The porter from Hub will obviously be covering quite a large area including different academic departments as well as accommodation blocks."
The exact details regarding the portering situation is still undergoing review by the university.
Clarke plans to push “for the maximum allocation of portering as is feasible” so that students living in the new Goodricke area are not inconvenienced or put in any risk as a result of scarce coverage.
The distance between the Nucleus to the Hub is scheduled to be 140m, around 2 minutes walk.
The new campus will see around 600 new rooms built as a part of Goodricke College, as well as the Atrium, which will be able to house social events and club bookings, and the Nucleus, which will be home to JCRs, University and College Admin Offices.
Goodricke College should be in place by October 2009, it is currently running a month ahead of schedule.
When will everyone just realise that Hes East is seen purely as a sound financial investment by the university, rather than the students themselves being something to invest in...
